How is a Bazi (four pillars) chart actually cast?
A Bazi chart is built from the four pillars of heavenly stems and earthly branches for a person's birth year, month, day and hour. The year pillar changes at the Start of Spring (立春); the month pillar follows the twelve solar nodes (e.g. Jingzhe opens the Mao month) and its stem is set by the "five tigers" year-to-month rule; the day pillar is computed from a formula or perpetual calendar; the hour pillar begins at 11 pm as the next day's Zi hour, its stem set by the "five rats" day-to-hour rule. Times must first be corrected to true solar time to the minute and converted to local time, or the pillars shift. With the four pillars fixed, the ten gods, elemental strength, major luck cycles and annual fluxes are derived. The method derives from 《渊海子平》 and 《三命通会》.

Bazi accuracy hinges on correct birth-time correction and the practitioner's interpretive depth, not on any deterministic formula. The system maps five elements (五行) and ten heavenly stems / twelve earthly branches (天干地支) into a four-pillar chart representing the year, month, day, and hour of birth. Major luck cycles (大运) shift every ten years; annual influences (流年) layer seasonal nuances on top. True solar time (真太阳时) must be calculated from longitude — a noon birth in Chengdu differs from noon in Beijing by roughly 50 minutes. Classical foundations rest on 《渊海子平》 for structural rules and 《三命通会》 for interpretive range. The chart reveals tendency maps: which elements are strong or weak, which periods favor certain directions or activities, where friction likely arises. Two people sharing identical pillars may follow different paths depending on choices, environment, and upbringing. Bazi frames probabilities and behavioral tendencies; it does not dictate fixed outcomes.
